A Nation of Juice Addicts? - Brief Article

Better Nutrition,  July, 2001

Think your kids are doing the right thing by drinking juice instead of soda? Think again, says the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Nutrition. In a recent issue of Pediatrics, the committee explained that while fruit juice is a healthy, natural source of vitamins and, in some instances, calcium, drinking too much of it can be detrimental.

Because juice tastes good, children readily drink it. Overconsumption of massmarket super-sweetened juice, however, could lead to tooth decay, diarrhea and childhood obesity. It is recommended that juice should be limited to four to six ounces for children ages 1 to 6 and eight to 12 ounces for children ages 7 to 18.
