Saving face: soothe and tone your skin more gently with aftershave—naturally

Better Nutrition,  June, 2006  by Kimberly J. Retzlaff

When it comes to personal care, being "natural" doesn't mean living in the woods, avoiding baths and swearing off shaving. Instead, it's all about reading labels and choosing products that protect and nourish the skin. Natural aftershaves do just that with healthful ingredients that soothe the skin and tone more gently than their mainstream counterparts.

Conventional aftershaves commonly contain ingredients like sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate or isopropyl alcohol, which can dry and irritate skin. Typical men's products not only have chemical ingredients, they also often have ingredients that clog pores. This defeats the purpose of the product entirely.

Natural aftershaves, on the other hand, are big on botanicals and essential oils that offer mild scents and gentle effectiveness. They're not as irritating as many mainstream aftershaves that tend to sting; rather, they gently soothe and moisturize the skin to heal razor burn and promote better skin health (see Ingredient Watch List). Plus, these natural ingredients deliver antioxidant benefits to the skin.

So the next time the razor burns, consider the skin-soothing, protective properties of a natural aftershave.
