Grants & awards - African American colleges - Brief Article

Claflin University (S.C.) has received a $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation t9 strengthen math, science, engineering and technology programs at the school. The money will be used to create programs for the retention and enrichment of science, engineering and math students at the university.

Emory University (Ga.) has received a $10 million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. to begin a doctoral program in practical theology.

Harris-Stowe State College (Mo.) received a $1 million grant from the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation to enhance the historically Black college's business administration program.

Hampton University's (Va.) Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences with the School of Pharmacy received $2.1 million from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The grant will be used to establish the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program. In addition, the Multicultural At Sea Together Program received $242,451 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to teach students about marine science, policy and the heritage of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.

Howard University (D.C.) received a $420,000 grant from the Department of Education to fund studies in international relations under the U.S.-Brazil Higher Education Consortia Program. The program connects American and Brazilian universities to develop an African American and Afro-Brazilian-based curriculum.

Trinity University (Texas) received $1.2 million from the Robert T. and Ruby N. Priddy Fund of Communities Foundation to develop a state-of-the art gateway to an array-of library and online information services.
