An aircraft carrying nine passengers and one pilot crashed yesterday (18 September) while landing at the Nuiqsut airport on Alaska's North Slope, killing four people.

The twin-engine aircraft, which was owned by the Alaskan regional carrier Cape Smythe Air, crashed at around 1500 (local time) near the airport runway. The aircraft went into the tundra and did not hit any buildings, said Paul Carr, chief of the North Slope Borough Police Department. Rescue crews from the North Slope Borough and the Nuiqsut Volunteer Fire Department attended the scene.

The six survivors were taken by helicopter to nearby hospitals and investigators from the National Transportation Board were expected to arrive at the crash site today (19 September) according to Dow Jones News. The identities of the four people killed have not yet been revealed.

Grant Thompson, President of Cape Smythe Air, said yesterday that he was not aware of any problems with the aircraft, but had not yet had time to check its service history.
