Got the fever?

Vegetarian Times,  March, 2002  by Maria Rabat

The symptoms are as unmistakable as the flu. They begin with a feeling of uncontrollable restlessness and an inability to concentrate. Then the anxiety, irritability and depression hits. The diagnosis: cabin lever. This is one fever that doesn't respond to aspirin or a steamy bowl of miso soup. But you can find relief with aromatherapy, the art and science of using aromatic plant oils, or essential oils, to enhance health and beauty.

Essential oils have long been known to relax the body and rejeuvenate the nervous system. To get the most out of their healing properties, add a few drops into the bath or a vaporizer, or just apply as you would perfume. For a case of cabin fever, consider floral oils, such as geranium, rose or jasmine, which are known for their balancing and restorative properties. Citrus oils, including bergamot and mandarin, are great for boosting the spirit and clearing the mind. And for a raging case of the doldrums, try the essential oils of chamomile, marjoram or ylang-ylang, all of which encourage emotional peace and have a calming effect on both body and spirit.
